In partnership with Albus Cavus, a DC non-profit that transforms communities through creativity, the gallery will become an open and interactive forum for artists to visually discuss the effects of unemployment on the lives of DC residents. The current state of unemployment breaks families and communities as individuals fall into despair, depression, and isolation. This collaborative show will engage visitors and artists alike to directly experience the power of art by providing engagement, therapy, training possibilities, and a colorful tool to build a stronger and healthier community.
Through a series of three on-site mural workshops we will transform the gallery space into a working studio. Participating visitors of all ages and artistic backgrounds will be encouraged to become a part of the collective work of art. They will experience the positive impact of art through techniques and materials that are widely used by graffiti and street artists. The completed mural will later be installed on DC’s streets.
Community Mural Workshops: Everyone is an artist in these collaborative mural workshops, which will result in an on-site mural. Exercise you mind and get involved on January 14, 28 and February 4 at 3.30pm.
Register online at www.smithcenter.org/gallery. The exhibit will be open from January 13 to February 18, 2012
Opening Reception – Friday, January 13, 7-9pm.
Final Mural Unveiling Celebration – Friday, February 17, 7-9pm.
